Year in Review 2009, President Richard Geist M.D.
245th. Dinner, HARRIS’S Sunday 29th. March
We sold out at 72. President Jack Gilliland MD welcomed his Lodi neighbor, David Lucas of David Lucas Winery, Lodi, to serve his wine and speak. He was the lead plaintiff in the big direct shipping lawsuit in New York, arguably one of the most
important wine industry cases ever to appear in court. David spoke on" What has the Mayflower to do with… Freeing the Grape!” Everyone really enjoyed Harris’s beef also accompanied by winemaker member Tom Kenefick’s Cabernet and Cabernet Franc.
246th. Dinner, FRENCH CLUB Wed. 27th. June
We sold out again at 60 thanks to Mark LeClerc M.D. who hosted this event. Richard Geist MD with the help of Ralph Brindis MD were successful in acquiring six different Williams Selyem wines to accompany a classical French menu. Two representatives of the winery spoke to the attendees.
247th. Dinner, CONCORDIA CLUB Sunday 20th. September
71 attended this dinner and enjoyed welcoming back John Buechsenstein, Wine Educator and Winemaker. JB presented another of his tasting seminars: "A Fresh Look at Wine Alcohol: Taste and Physiology" In view of the recent trend of higher alcohol in many wines, especially many from the New World, this seminar reviewed the contribution of ethanol to a wine’s body, taste and cellaring. Two mini-flights (six wines) were served blindly as examples of ethanol effects and for comparison. HB explained why the traditional lessons of "alcohol equivalency" in calculating BAC need careful review.
VINTAGE TOUR to LODI Saturday
President Jack Gilliland helped Susan plan a tour to his appellation. Our group enjoyed a well planned presentation at the Lodi Visitor Center. David Lucas welcomed us to his winery and then we continued on the Berghold’s beautiful property and especially enjoyed their Merlot, a change
to all the local Zins. We also visited Macchia before continuing on to the newly opened St. Jorge winery. We especially enjoyed a BBQ dinner al fresco in the courtyard accompanied by a local Dixieland jazz band. The group loved the day out to Lodi and seeing how the area has developed and been planted.
71st. Annual Dinner, RITZ CARLTON San Francisco Sunday 24th. January 2010
We had a very successful turnout of 107 to pay tribute to outgoing President Richard Geist M.D. An excellent dinner was enjoyed by all in the Terrace Room of the Ritz Carlton accompanied by two speakers! The Society was delighted to welcome Merry Edwards who spoke on her speciality of “Cloning” and the menu was accompanied by her Sauvignon Blanc and two of her renowned Pinot Noirs. We were also fortunate to welcome back Arthur Klatsky M.D. who updated us on his pet subject “Wine, Alcohol & Health” – Scientific Truths at the Start f a new Decade. Dinner was excellent.
