249th. Dinner Marché, Menlo Park Sunday 21st. March

Thanks to Lynn Gretkowski M.D. and Mary Jacobson MD, who introduced SMFW to this wonderful restaurant. Chef Bienaimé was most diligent in creating a very special menu for us. The dinner was preceded by a member winemaker tasting. C. Bacigalupi, T. Kenefick, N. Panting, WineDoctors (Lynn Gretkowski and Mary Jacobson) and A. Zolopa kindly participated. The tasting was very congenial and a perfect opportunity for members to taste fellow members’ wines. Bruce Cass, Wine Educator at Stanford and CIA spoke and also Marcia Stefanick PhD. on “Alcohol and Breast Cancer: What evidence do we have for wine?”


250th. Dinner, Hotel Vitale Embarcadero San Francisco Sunday 27th. June

51 enjoyed Chef Kory Stewart’s Italian themed dinner based on sustainably farmed local produce.

Jack Gilliland MD brought the speaker of the evening , Leonard Cicerello and local olive oil producer spoke on “Extra Virgin Olive Oil Production in the New World” and brought some of his oils to taste. Part of his talk suggested how important labeling will become, since unlike wine today, we often have no idea from which country the actual oil originates from.


251st. Dinner, Taj - Campton Place Hotel San Francisco Sunday 27th. September

Chef Srijith Gopinathan created a very interesting menu incorporating many different eastern spices. The menu offered a most interesting wine pairing challenge and Daniel Bikle MD rose to that challenge with the help of M. Rivo and M.Amiththara and J. Eiband on the food committee


White Burgundy Wine Tasting Sunday 16th. May

Presented by Robert Blumberg MD and Larry Dennen MD. We tasted 9 wines and the fun was

trying to recognize the one CA Chardonnay in the mix. Members, who attended, very much enjoyed the educational angle of the tasting.


VINTAGE TOUR to Dry Creek Valley Saturday 23rd. October

We thought we had planned a great day touring Dry Creek Valley. Unfortunately it turned into Wet Creek Valley! The heavens opened and did not let up all day. We were still able to enjoy a visit to Michel Schlumberger. The team up at Sbragia were still able to welcome us to their

covered terrace where we tasted wines and enjoyed a light lunch. Then, wee continued on to the newly renovated Lambert Bridge Winery. Sadly we could not enjoy the gardens, but were very comfortable in the redwood tasting room pairing their reds with some very good and unique cheeses. We continued on to Santa Rosa dining at John Ash & Co. Considering the weather, everyone was really a good sport and enjoyed the day. It did not hurt hearing the Giants win the playoffs on the way home!


Red Burgundy Wine Tasting Sunday 7th. November

Presented again by popular demand, our experienced partners Blumberg/Dennen offered 11

Burgundies and 1 Oregon Pinot Noir to taste. We are very fortunate to have these two members

plan these educational tastings. Planning the wine choices, how to fit them in a number of flights certainly proves their years of experience in this field.


72nd. Annual Dinner Stanford Court Hotel Sunday 23rd. January 2011

SMFW returned to Stanford Court Hotel to be welcomed back by Chef Werner Albrecht and Maitre D’ Stephen. Chef was excited to present a “From Farm to Table” menu and Jack Gilliland invited Preston Maring MD to speak on “Produce to the People” to continue the “health” theme.

Dr. Maring was the first MD. to have the vision of starting Farmer Markets in hospital locations.

He has been responsible of starting markets in 59 hospitals around the country, but mostly in his Kaiser locations. It was fascinating to observe both the Dr. and the Chef’s passion of supporting

local sustainable and organic farms.
